Aubrey and the Song of Coralle

this is the fairy tale of mine which was made in the fourth semester; one of my genre-based writing tasks. Inspired from "Aubrey" my fav song from Bread, and Corale (actuallly it's single L) the name of my brother's school choir group. Of course the father here is the fiction representation of my dad <3. Aubrey and her father looks pretty well like me and my lovely oldman. :)

Aubrey and the Song of Coralle
By: Puspa Merah R

And Aubrey was her name
A not so very ordinary girl or name
But who’s to blame?
For a love…that wouldn’t bloom
For the hearts that never played in tune……….

“Dad, whose song is that?”
“That’s your song dear…”
“Mine…..?”
“Literally yes……”

It was a long and winding night in April. The pale moonlight shadow lighted a wooden grange in the silent countryside. There were no sounds besides the wind and the voice of a father who was singing a lullaby for his only one daughter, Aubrey.
“Can you keep singing that till I fall asleep?” she said.
“Let’s sleep Aubrey, tomorrow will be nice.”
“Oh…Dad please, I love that song. You’ve never sung it before.”
“Alright, but as soon you ought to sing this song for me,” the father said.
“Okay Dad. When I’m getting used to it.”
The father kept singing the song until her daughter slept tight. He turned off the candles in the chandelier and closed the bow window covered in yellow curtain.

The next day, Aubrey was still questioning about that song. She came into her father who was watering the land which was full of beautiful Tulips.
“Why must be Aubrey….there are a lot of names Dad, aren’t there?” asked Aubrey.
“Yes there are, but Aubrey is not an ordinary girl or name,” replied the father.
“Oh…I see. It’s about me.”
“Who said so?” the father asked.
“You said, last night.”

The father smiled and walked into the grange.

“That song is The Coralle’s Song,” the father said.
“The Coralle?”
“Yes, the Boscombe Kingdom’s Choir. They used to be the most beautiful voices that Boscombe had. The Honorable Baron XI loved them,” the father said.
“Where are they now?” Aubrey asked.
“Live in peace,” the father answered calmly.
“And, the Coralle consisted of two men and a woman. The woman who wrote and sang that song,” the father added.
“The woman believed that one day, there would be a girl or a woman who would replace her to sing that song,” said the father
“Hmm… I want to be that one,” Aubrey said.
“Just prove that, sing the song every day. I’ve heard that Boscombe Kingdom is looking for its brand-new Choir.”
“Really? But I’m 15 years old,” she said and wrinkled.
“Who knows if the destiny proves it might be you,” the father said.
“I’ll try it, I love the song. I’ll sing it for you Dad,” she said.
“I hope so dear. And remember, only a kind-hearted person who can sing that song beautifully,”

Aubrey smiled and went out to the yard. Day by day, She was a nice girl. She helped her father with the Tulips yard, cooking for her father, and singing that lullaby every single night while playing the guitar. Aubrey was the same as she used to be. Nothing changed; she was a pure kind-hearted girl.

One day, the father went out of the country side to sell the blossoming Tulips. Aubrey was alone in the grange. She played the guitar and sang Aubrey song. Suddenly there was someone who knocked the door. She walked into the door and opened it. An old woman in a pink pastel tattered gown stood in front of the yard. She looked under the weather. Aubrey let her came into the house and made a cup of warm chicory for her. The old woman looked so weary, she didn’t say any words. But she gazed at Aubrey’s guitar.
“Can I help you?” asked Aubrey.
The old woman just kept silent and pointed her finger into Aubrey’s guitar.
“That’s my guitar; you want me to play it for you?” Aubrey asked.
“No, but may I have that one? For…for my grandchild,” finally the old woman uttered some words.
Aubrey thought for a while, she felt so sorry with the old woman. But she loved that guitar for playing and singing the Aubrey song. There was something raged in her mind.
“Does your grandchild love music?” she asked.
“Yes, she does. She always sings some lullabies for me before I go to sleep,” the old woman answered.

After listening the old woman’s answer, she was sure that it was a great decision to give that guitar to the old woman’s grandchild.
Surely, she gave her guitar to the old woman. The old woman said thank you and left the grange in the winding noon. Aubrey smiled and looked very glad of the old woman’s happiness. She imagined how happy the grandchild was when the old woman brought that guitar for her.

The day after that, Aubrey was still alone in the grange. Meanwhile, today was the day of the singing competition for Boscombe Kingdom’s Choir. Her father still hadn’t come yet. She was ready to go there but she wanted the father right beside her. After hesitating and waiting for a long time, she decided to go there by herself. She wouldn’t lose this precious chance.

She had to cross the Oak Wood and some lands with Lilac trees and Buttercup flowers, and finally she arrived. In the Boscombe Kingdom, the people had already been there. They wanted to join the singing competition or just for merely watching the contestants. The Honorable Baron XII and the Queen felt the enthusiasm of the Boscombe people. Then the competition begun, all male and female gave their best performances. The contestant had to sing with the instrumental following. Aubrey didn’t know about that, she was confused because he had no guitar anymore. She tried to find one in the Boscombe Kingdom, but no one had a guitar.

“I have a guitar but it has only two strings,” said a man in the grey cape.
Aubrey felt so sad, “Oh Dad… where are you? I need you now.”
Then, it was Aubrey’s turn. The minister called her name, ”Aubrey from Gillian country side…”
“Yes, I’m.” Aubrey said.
“What instrumental are you going to use?” the Minister asked.
“The guitar. But I don’t have the guitar with me and no one here has guitar Sir.” Aubrey answered.
“You need the instrumental, you can’t sing here without the instrumental. What song are you going to sing? Perhaps the Minister can play the piano,” the adorable Queen said.
“I’m going to sing Aubrey song, The Honorable Queen,” she said.
“Aubrey? I think that I’ve ever heard that song. But it has been a really long time, when my father still alive. But I’m forget the chords,” The Honorable Baron XII said.
“But you can’t go on without the instrumental, The Honorable King couldn’t play that for you,” the Minister said.
Aubrey felt so deflated. She thought that she had lost the precious chance.
“Is anyone here can play the Aubrey song’s instrumental?” the Minister asked to all the people there.

No one knew the song. But suddenly, there was a sound of guitar. The old woman in a pink pastel tattered gown came along with the guitar in her hand.

“I’ll play it for that girl,” the old woman said.
Aubrey was so excited. She began to sing with the guitar instrumental of the old woman. The Honorable Baron XII, the Queen, the Minister, and all the people there were falling in love with Aubrey’s voice.

“It’s a voice from heaven,” The Honorable Baron XII said.
“It’s the song of Coralle, my father told me the story about that beautiful song,” The Honorable Baron XII said and he was amazed of Aubrey’s voice.
The Queen and the people shed the tears, the voice of Aubrey mesmerizing all the people there.
“Alright, we get the answer who will be the one of Boscombe Kingdom’s choir singers, and also as the Boscombe Kingdom’s Singer,” The King said.
Aubrey was crying but she felt so happy. She would to thanks to the old woman. But she didn’t find her. She only found the people who were giving applause in that evening of April.
Then, the father came and felt so proud of her daughter.
“I know…. You can do that my sweetie pumpkin,” the father said and hugged his daughter.
Aubrey just smiled, deep on the bottom of her heart she thanked to her father, the old woman, and of course to the Coralle who sang the Aubrey song.

#Aubrey is originally a song of Bread band (soft-rock)

2014's reflection

it was written in the end of December. BUt I've just posted it cause am waiting for the translation blog is being corrected. The reader was so super when I posted those things. Then from now on I'll try to make them come back and read other ones :D

But overall, it has been a great year.
Awal semester 4 ngejalanin kuliah 4 mku, super. Liat saja tulisan taun depan InsyaAllah :D)

Berikut daftar mku-nya
*manajemen sekolah: observasi k mts. Dikelas jg ketemu temen yg super pemikirannya, dosen aja diajak berargumen -__- setiap ngasi statement g pernah lupa men-quote kata kata tokoh yg bersangkutan, kyk cerita novel aja hhe.*plh: fotonovela, tua sendiri, berkesan, sangat :)*b.indonesia:  ketemu dosen paling narsis sedunia, dengan statement menggelikan tentang mengubah mawar putih jadi mawar merah hha.

Haa itu titik’’ sepertinya harus diisi.

Well, kuliah semester 4 masih sama kyk sebelum’’nya. Ada yg sedikit beda yaitu kuliah “CCU” event yg pertama kalinya jadiin sy sekretaris p.u. padahal tau banget bukan anak organisasi dan bukan orang yg well-organized -__- tapi itu amanah, dan trnyata sangat berkesan.. (jadi kepikiran gimana pusingnya menteri sekretaris negara) –haa
CCU buat saya ngerasa jadi anak kos kosan (kalo pas g lg nginep dirumah sepupu hehe), enak, tapi kebangetan juga bisa sampe homesick padahal jg msh disemarang  -_-
CCU  bikin saya tau rasanya pulang rapat sampai jam 12, rela melakukan hal yg g paling saya suka yaitu koreografi  buat perform PU -_-. Tp fun makan malem’’ bareng temen-temen seru. Dan jam tidur yg kurang hehe.  Semua itu terbayar, semakin deket hari H makin semangat, bantuin ndekdok sebisanya, dan makin akrab sama Lia trus sharing banyak hal….

-----------------------------

Eh buber….ketemu ipa 5, temen’’ yg bikin kangen terus.

Lebaran, bulan Agustus bukan? Duh lupa lagi :D
Alhamdulillah, it was a great Ramadhan. Takbiran tiap taun dan taun ini kapalnya Nabi Nuh pun jadi maskotnya :D (kadang kepikiran bapak’’ mushola RT emang tim dekdok yg keren :D)  Lebaran, silaturahim deket deket rumah dulu.
Oh yaa kedatangan tamu 2 orang teman baik yg merantau jauh :D haha si baskoro sm satrio. Temen tk dan smp dan tetangga yg selalu bikin ketawa disetiap obrolannya. Kita jadi makin lengkap kalo berempat sama niken juga :D (jadi teletubbies). Sering’’ pulang semarang bro..
Jadi inget punya sahabat si precious friend havez hekmathyar, gmn kabarnya bro :D
Next, libur lebaran kedatangan tamu yg ditunggu”---à keluarga besar Sastro Dimedjo <3 walaupun g lengkap semua ke smrg, tp ttep berkesan, sepupu’’ yg ngangenin….

Having Quality time’’ sm sepupu’’… so lovely.

Alhamdulillah,
Lanjut pulang semarang, liburan dirumah….. belum belajar masak, padahal banyak dinasehatin bulek waktu itu “apapun wanita itu pangkat tertingginya yaa didapur, dirumah.” “laki-laki itu suka masakan istrinya” (intinya begitu kata-katanya) Cuma jawab Oh….njeh’’.. :D
Latian masak tapi yg doyan masakan saya cuma masih saya sendiri hehe. Keep struggling latiannya !
Liburan dirumah jg jadi cover’’ lagu sm elang. Buat soundcloud jg, g bagus sh cm buat fun’’ aja hhee.

Liburan yg menyenangkan pun berakhir. Traaa… jadi deadliner lagi :D
------------------------------------------

Yaa Allah, semester5 ini jauh dari perkiraan. Super semua makulnya.
Awal September,Oktober,November.
Jika dua orang memang benar2 saling menyukai satu sama lain.
So sweet.
Semoga :)
Haha jadi mellow lagi :D
-------------------------------------------
Next event, kkl k jogja. Seru sangat seru….( Dicritain tambah panjang ntar)

Banyak nasehat yg dikasih sm sitta, putri, lia, nilam, sharing sm rina, sebenernya intinya mereka maksud kalo hal itu ya sy sndiri yg bs menyelesaikan dn sikap yg harus dijelaskan, dibicarakan, n I have tried..

Hampir diakhir semester 5, nyelesaiin tugas’’.
*dpt ijin k wonosobo sendirian
*bener bener disawah liat awan mendung
*banyak juga hal’’ yg g pernah terduga sebelumnya, so special :)
Bahagia emang sederhana. :)

Waktu yg berlalu sm keluarga n orang’’ disekeliling saya.
Maaf, mungkin sering liat “my dropped tears”
Belum bisa bersikap yg dewasa mungkin, smt5 yg super mungkin :)
Kedengarannya agak egois, tapi rasanya g mau kehilangan sedikitpun. Jadi inget kata kata
“……sama aja aku punya sesuatu kalo g ada lagi ya pasti ngerasa kehilangan…..”
--------------------
end of December,
thanks awfully for people around me, thank you for being part of this life and completing me :)

“I do really know that they understand me well even though am not telling so much words, but let me tell :)) “

TRANSLATION PROCEDURES AND THE EXAMPLES

Transference     : it is the process of transferring an SL word to a TL text. It includes transliteration         and is the same as what Harvey (2000:5) named "transcription."
e.g                       : diet-diet
                              transfer-transfer

Naturalization   : it adapts the SL word first to the normal pronunciation, then to the normal                     morphology of the TL. (Newmark, 1988b:82)
e.g                       : complex-kompleks
                               procedure- prosedur
                               procedural- procedural
                               morphology- morfologi

Cultural equivalent  : it means replacing a cultural word in the SL with a TL one. however, "they       are not accurate" (Newmark, 1988b:83)
e.g                               : thanks giving- perayaan syukuran
baby shower- “tilik bayi”, menjenguk bayi

Functional equivalent : it requires the use of a culture-neutral word. (Newmark, 1988b:83)
e.g                                  : *april fools- april mop
*this is snake’s house- ini adalah sarang ular
                                        *“Ouch!”- “Aduh!”

Descriptive equivalent : in this procedure the meaning of the CBT is explained in several words.             (Newmark, 1988b:83)

Componential analysis : it means "comparing an SL word with a TL word which has a similar                 meaning but is not an obvious one-to-one equivalent, by demonstrating             first their common and then their differing sense components." (Newmark,       1988b:114)
e.g                                   : *Don’t cry over a spoiled milk- nasi sudah menjadi bubur
*beat about the bush- bertele tele
                                          *pay homage- penghormatan terakhir
                                          *my sweetie pumpkin- sayangku, manisku

Synonymy           : it is a "near TL equivalent." Here economy trumps accuracy. (Newmark,                      1988b:84)
e.g                          : trousers- celana panjang
                                 sweater- baju hangat
                                 city dump- tempat pembuangan sampah

Through-translation       : it is the literal translation of common collocations, names of organizations         and components of compounds. It can also be called: calque or loan                   translation. (Newmark, 1988b:84)
e.g                                     : public school- sekolah negeri
                                             private school- sekolah swasta

Shifts or transpositions : it involves a change in the grammar from SL to TL, for instance, (i)                    change from singular to plural, (ii) the change required when a specific SL        structure does not exist in the TL, (iii) change of an SL verb to a TL word,        change of an SL noun group to a TL noun and so forth. (Newmark,                    1988b:86)
e.g                                    :  that cars- mobil itu
I need three apples- saya butuh tiga buah apel
“How are you going?”- Apa kabar?
Have a nice day!- Semoga harimu menyenangkan!

Modulation        : it occurs when the translator reproduces the message of the original text in the TL         text in conformity with the current norms of the TL, since the SL and the TL may         appear dissimilar in terms of perspective. (Newmark, 1988b:88)
e.g                       : he was killed in the war- dia gugur dalam peperangan
the baby was born premature- bayi itu lahir prematur

Recognized translation : it occurs when the translator "normally uses the official or the generally             accepted translation of any institutional term." (Newmark, 1988b:89)
e.g                                    : House of Representative- MPR/ DPR
                                           UNO- PBB

Compensation  : it occurs when loss of meaning in one part of a sentence is compensated in another        part. (Newmark, 1988b:90)
e.g                          ; *never will I let the tears drop - tak akan pernah kubiarkan air matamu                  terjatuh
*“it is not I used to be” – “ ini bukan aku yang dulu”

Paraphrase         : in this procedure the meaning of the CBT is explained. Here the explanation is              much more detailed than that of descriptive equivalent. (Newmark, 1988b:91)

Couplets              : it occurs when the translator combines two different procedures. (Newmark,                1988b:91)
e.g                          : *it needs some getting used to- ini butuh kesabaran
*both of them are war like – keduanya suka bertengkar  (through                              translation+  componential analysis)
*inconsidered people- orang yang tak punya tenggang rasa (transposition+              through translation+ componential analysis)

Notes                    : notes are additional information in a translation. (Newmark, 1988b:91)
e.g                          : *She slept in the grange1
                                 * Kimy loves mozzarella2 cheese
2mozzarella= keju Italia putih yang lembut

Aesthetic-Poetic Translation

This poem is cited from the book “Rimbun Dahan” selected poems by Cecep Syamsul Hari. This is a kind of bilingual edition poem book (English-Indonesia)

English

At the Market

By Cecep Syamsul Hari

In a burning afternoon
A group of labors returned to their Javanese

They grumbled about rupiahs that getting weak
Police patrol and land overseas to be subjected
Detained passport and a bit of ringgits left in the pocket

Why the cheap bus to Kajang
Never come up?

Don’t talk about love with us
It just belongs to the poetry

Don’t push us to the Indonesian embassy
They don’t belongs to the labors

Don’t remind us about prohibitions
In a country that forbid immoral manners

Why the cheap bus to Kajang
Never come up?

But live is not only a story of wickedness
Nor the painting exhibition of sorrow

Live is also a promising prosperity in the line of Utopia
And we come to grasp it

In a burning afternoon
A group of labors returned to their Javanese

In the three ringgits bus to Kajang
I returned back without knowing to what

Nor to whom

Mereka bukan milik kaum pekerja

Jangan ingatkan kami akan larangan-larangan
Di negeri yang melarang berlaku sumbang

Kenapa bis murah ke Kajangtak kunjung datang?

Tetapi hidup tidak hanya kisah kekerasan
Atau pameran lukisan kesedihanHidup

Tetapi juga janji kemakmuran di garis Utopia
Dan kami datang untuk mengejarnya

Pada sebuah siang yang membara
Sekelompok pekerja pulang ke bahasa Jawa
Di dalam bis tiga ringgit ke Kajang

Aku pun pulang entah kepada apa
Entah kepada siapa
